Tuesday’s loss has all but ended the Heat’s hopes of advancing to the NBA Cup, as reported by Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald. With the defeat, Miami falls to a 1-2 record in the tournament, leaving their chances of progression highly improbable.

Even with a win against Toronto on Friday, the team would still require multiple favorable outcomes from other games to have any shot at moving forward.

“It’s disappointing,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra admitted. “… We wanted to be there in Vegas.”

The team had expressed a strong desire to compete on the bigger stage in Las Vegas, but the loss underscores the challenge of the NBA’s inaugural in-season tournament format.

While still mathematically in contention, Miami’s fate is no longer in their hands, making the frustration of falling short even more palpable.
