Clippers prioritize winning to attract 2027 free agents

The LA Clippers are focused on winning games in the 2026-27 season to strengthen their appeal to free agents next summer, when they are expected to have maximum salary-cap space, according to Jake Fischer.

The Clippers have started the season 1-6, with Darius Garland averaging 20.1 points and 6.6 assists through seven games. Rui Hachimura is contributing 13.4 points per game, while Brook Lopez is averaging 12.6 points and 4.7 rebounds.

Winning is a priority as the organization looks ahead to the 2027 offseason. The Clippers are projected to have significant financial flexibility, with their salary outlook listing approximately $185 million in total cap allocations against a projected $176 million salary cap for 2027-28. That figure includes existing commitments and does not represent confirmed available cap room.

The team’s current roster includes several contracts that expire or reach decision points before the 2027-28 season. Max Strus, Derrick Jones Jr., Brook Lopez and Kris Dunn are all potential free agents, while Rui Hachimura has a club option.

Garland and Brandon Ingram remain the largest projected salary commitments, with their 2027-28 salaries listed at approximately $44.9 million and $41.9 million, respectively.

The Clippers’ ability to create maximum cap space will therefore depend on their roster decisions and applicable cap holds.

The franchise is also coming off a major organizational setback. In September, the NBA announced penalties against the Clippers over salary-cap circumvention involving Kawhi Leonard, including five forfeited first-round picks and a $30 million fine. Leonard was subsequently traded to Toronto during the offseason.
