Former NBA guard J.R. Smith discussed LeBron James and Luka Doncic with Texas police officers shortly before being arrested on September 28.
According to body camera footage obtained by the California Post, Smith was stopped by Royse City police officers after they suspected he had an outstanding arrest warrant.
While investigating, officers began discussing Smith’s NBA career, including his two championships with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers.
“Two,” Smith said when asked about his championship rings.
“So, you got a ring with Kyrie [Irving],” one officer asked.
“Kyrie and LeBron,” Smith responded.
One officer, apparently a Dallas Mavericks fan, then expressed frustration with James over the February 2025 trade that sent Doncic to the Lakers.
He referred to James as “He who shall not be named.”
“Not a fan?” Smith asked.
“He stole Luka [Doncic] from us,” the officer replied. “He stole Luka from us. That was all him.”
“Nobody was happy about that,” another officer added.
“I’m still mad,” the first officer said. “Still mad.”
Moments later, officers confirmed Smith had an active warrant and placed him in handcuffs.
The warrant stemmed from an alleged September 18 domestic violence incident in Tarrant County, Texas.
Smith was accused of causing bodily injury to a woman with whom he had a family, household, or dating relationship.
Smith was arrested and later released. His attorney, Justin A. Moore, said his client was “eager to see this matter resolved and has full confidence in the legal process.”
“He is presumed innocent, and we will address this matter in Court,” Moore added. “We ask that everyone respect the privacy of all involved throughout the process.”
Smith is expected to appear in court again next month.
