The Charlotte Hornets have decided to exercise the third-year team option on guard Nick Smith Jr., keeping the 20-year-old under contract for the 2025-26 season.
The option is valued at $2.71 million, and according to league sources cited by NBA insider Michael Scotto, the decision reflects Charlotte’s confidence in Smith’s potential. Known for his perimeter shooting, Smith led all rookies last season with a 43.2% shooting percentage from beyond the arc.
During his rookie year, Smith averaged 5.9 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 14.3 minutes per game. The Arkansas product entered the league as a late first-round pick but quickly demonstrated why Charlotte values his skillset, particularly his efficient scoring.
Smith’s preseason showing against the Indiana Pacers reinforced the Hornets’ expectations. In limited action, he recorded 14 points. Despite not seeing action in Charlotte’s first three games this season, the guard is seen as a developmental asset who could play a more significant role as he gains experience.
