The Memphis Grizzlies have signed Japanese point guard Yuki Kawamura to a two-way contract after an impressive showing during the preseason. Kawamura, who initially joined the team on an Exhibit 10 contract, has quickly become a fan favorite in Memphis.
Drew Hill of the Daily Memphian tweeted: “The Memphis Grizzlies are promoting Japanese point guard Yuki Kawamura from an Exhibit 10 contract to a two-way contract, sources tell me. Kawamura, who is learning English, has become a fan favorite in Memphis.”
Kawamura, 23, appeared in five preseason games for the Grizzlies, averaging 3.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 15 minutes per game. His playmaking and ability to control the tempo of the game caught the attention of the Grizzlies’ coaching staff, securing him a spot on the roster under the two-way deal.
The young point guard’s journey to the NBA has been remarkable. Kawamura began his professional career in Japan’s B.League as a “special designated player” for the San-en NeoPhoenix in 2020 while still attending Fukuoka Daiichi High School. At just 18 years old, he became the youngest player in B.League history, making an immediate impact and later becoming the youngest player to score in the league.
Following his stint with the NeoPhoenix, Kawamura moved to the Yokohama B-Corsairs, where he continued to develop his game. During the 2022-23 season, Kawamura won the B.League’s MVP award, Rookie of the Year, and earned a spot on the Best Five team. His success in Japan set the stage for his NBA opportunity with the Grizzlies.
Kawamura’s two-way contract will allow him to split time between the Grizzlies and their G League affiliate, the Memphis Hustle. This setup gives Kawamura the chance to continue honing his skills while also contributing to the Grizzlies’ depth at the point guard position.
Standing at 5 feet 8 inches, Kawamura has drawn comparisons to fellow Japanese guard Yuki Togashi, who also overcame height challenges to excel on the international stage. Kawamura’s ability to play with speed, vision, and precision has made him a standout in his native Japan and is now earning him recognition in the NBA.
The Grizzlies are known for their focus on player development, and Kawamura’s signing aligns with the team’s commitment to nurturing young talent. The two-way deal offers Kawamura valuable experience in the NBA while allowing him to play significant minutes in the G League, where he can further refine his game.
