As the Los Angeles Lakers continue their search for a new head coach, James Borrego, currently an associate head coach with the New Orleans Pelicans, is reportedly the top contender for the position.

According to insights from Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, Borrego has emerged as the frontrunner in the Lakers’ coaching search, despite the team’s recent failed pursuit of UConn head coach Dan Hurley.

While former player JJ Redick was previously rumored as a top candidate, Borrego’s candidacy has gained momentum in recent discussions within the league.

Borrego brings a wealth of coaching experience to the table, having previously served as the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets and in various assistant coaching roles with other NBA teams.

Known for his strategic acumen and player development skills, Borrego could provide the leadership and direction needed to guide the Lakers back to championship contention.

The Lakers’ coaching vacancy arose following the departure of Darvin Ham, who was relieved of his duties following the first-round playoff exit.

With Borrego now emerging as the leading candidate, Lakers management will likely intensify their efforts to secure the new head coach before the NBA Draft which will take place in June 26.
