Pelicans interim head coach James Borrego highlighted his team’s toughness despite a 133-121 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday at Crypto.com Arena.
“They’re a good team. They’re going to make shots. I like our response after the first quarter,” Borrego said, praising New Orleans’ ability to battle back after falling behind early.
Borrego credited his team’s improvement in the second half, noting, “Third quarters were growing… Our defense was much more active there in the second half and it led to good offense.”
Bryce McGowens had a career-high performance, earning recognition from Borrego. “His ability to get downhill, make plays, he’s an aggressive driver… Every time he’s on the floor, good things happen,” Borrego said.
Micah Peavy also made progress from beyond the arc, knocking down three three-pointers. Borrego emphasized, “It’s great for his confidence… He’s got to build on that, trust his shot.”
The coach highlighted the team’s character and resiliency amid injuries and facing a team led by Luka Doncic. “Ultimately we’re just leaning into our character… No matter who’s out there, it’s your job… Never drop the sword,” he said.
Despite missing Zion Williamson and Trey Murphy III, New Orleans remained competitive, winning the third quarter and nearly matching the Lakers in the fourth. Borrego added, “For us to stay in battle, even when we were down 20 plus, I felt like our guys continued to battle.”
The Pelicans struggled early as the Lakers opened with 46 points in the first quarter, led by Luka Doncic’s 34 points, including 20 in the opening period. Austin Reaves added 33 points and eight assists, while Deandre Ayton posted 22 points and 12 rebounds.
New Orleans will aim to rebound against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday, hoping to build on the resiliency Borrego praised, while Los Angeles looks to extend its winning streak against the Phoenix Suns on Monday.
