Former NBA coach George Karl seized the moment to poke fun at Lakers fans following Dan Hurley’s rejection of a substantial contract offer from the Purple and Gold.

In a tongue-in-cheek tweet, Karl, who has been taking shots at Lakers fans recently, joked that he would accept the job offer that was initially extended to Hurley.

“Yes, Lakers Fans, I will accept the offer that was made to Coach Hurley and take the job instead!” Karl tweeted.

Despite the allure of coaching in the NBA and a substantial financial package, Hurley has opted to remain in the college ranks, continuing his coaching journey with the UConn Huskies.

Amidst speculation surrounding his potential move to the Lakers, Hurley ultimately chose to stay loyal to his current position at UConn.

The 51-year-old coach’s rejection of the Lakers’ reported six-year, $70 million offer comes as a setback for the franchise, which had pursued him vigorously for the head coaching role.

With Hurley out of contention, the Lakers will refocus their efforts on their coaching search, aiming to finalize a hiring decision ahead of the upcoming NBA Draft.

Candidates such as James Borrego and JJ Redick are under consideration for the Lakers’ coaching vacancy.

According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers are keen to appoint a new head coach before the 2024 NBA Draft, scheduled for June 26.
