UConn head coach Dan Hurley has issued a statement following his decision to decline a significant contract offer from the Los Angeles Lakers.
In his statement, Hurley expressed gratitude for the experience and pride in the championship culture at UConn, emphasizing his commitment to the Huskies’ pursuit of excellence.
“I am humbled by this entire experience. At the end of the day, I am extremely proud of the championship culture we have built at Connecticut. We met as a team before today’s workout and our focus right now is getting better this summer and connecting as a team as we continued to pursue championships,” Hurley’s statement reads.
Despite the allure of the NBA and a lucrative contract, Hurley has opted to remain in the college ranks, reaffirming his dedication to leading the Huskies in Connecticut.
Hurley’s choice concludes a period of intense speculation surrounding his potential move to the Lakers, who vigorously pursued him as a top coaching candidate.
The Lakers’ offer reportedly included a six-year, $70 million deal, highlighting the organization’s eagerness to secure Hurley as their next head coach.
With Hurley out of contention, the Lakers will refocus their efforts on identifying and interviewing other candidates to fill their coaching vacancy.
Among the potential candidates under consideration are James Borrego and JJ Redick.
The Lakers aim to finalize their coaching decision before the 2024 NBA Draft, providing clarity and stability ahead of the upcoming season.
While Hurley was enticed by the Lakers’ offer, ultimately, his commitment to UConn and the Huskies’ championship aspirations prevailed.
