On February 21, 2017 NBA legend Magic Johnson was given an executive role (president of basketball operations) on the Lakers. Two years later he stepped down, citing the desire to return to being an NBA ambassador.

He was the one who helped bring LeBron James to Los Angeles in 2018 after four year with the Cavaliers. Johnson also worked on getting Anthony Davis to the Lakers, although unsuccessfully.

It turns out that the real reason behind his resignation was the team owner’s refusal to fire head coach Luke Walton, who, according to Johnson, was not making adjustments in the game and was not going to improve.

“I wanted to fire Luka Walton,” the five-time NBA champion said, per Landon Buford. “I said Jeanie your man don’t have it. He doesn’t make adjustments with in the game. I hate to tell you that because I know you love him… Non basketball people say I can’t make those calls.”
