Could the Golden State Warriors bring another superstar to the team this summer like they did with Kevin Durant back in 2016? According to Connor Letourneau of San Francisco Chronicle, the Dubs have been preparing for years to make a bid for Giannis Antetokounmpo and this year could be a breakthrough. But, it will depend on how the Milwaukee Bucks do.

It has been reported in the past and observed by several analysts that Giannis’ future in Milwaukee will depend on the Bucks ability to win a championship. If that doesn’t happen in the near future, i.e. in 1-2 years, the reigning NBA MVP could leave the team. For now, the 25-year-old is reportedly happy in Milwaukee.

Letourneau also made the case how the NBA shutdown could increase the Warriors’ chances of landing Antetokounmpo. With the growing optimism around the league, there might be a season completion. However, it would most likely be a shortened version. Possibly with truncated playoff series.

If so, that would increase the chances of an upset. Especially with different teams potentially being at different levels of readiness. In case the Bucks face an early exit in the playoffs, Giannis could start doubting whether to sign an extension this summer. If he opts out not το sign it, he would become a free agent in 2021.

Milwaukee would then be motivated to find a trade for Antetokounmpo instead of losing him as a free agent next summer. That’s where the Warriors could step in.

This season, the Bucks star is averaging 29.6 points, 13.7 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game for the team which is sitting atop the Eastern Conference with the best record (53-12) in the league. Giannis is again primed to win the MVP title.
