The Jazz are ending Mo Bamba’s second 10-day contract early, Kevin Reynolds of The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
Bamba will not complete the deal because he was unable to travel with the team on its three-game road trip after becoming ill.
His contract was scheduled to expire next Tuesday, but Utah is releasing him early to create a roster spot for Bez Mbeng, who is expected to sign a 10-day contract.
Since Bamba was on a 10-day agreement, he becomes a free agent immediately and does not have to clear waivers.
He will still receive the full $177,064 from the contract, with Utah taking on a cap hit of $131,970 ($263,940 total for his two 10-day deals).
The former lottery pick spent most of this season in the G League with the Salt Lake City Stars and briefly played with Toronto earlier in the year.
In four NBA appearances with the Raptors and Jazz this season, he averaged 2.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in 11.0 minutes per game.
Utah also signed rookie forward Andersson Garcia to a 10-day deal on Wednesday.
The former Texas A&M player, who had been playing in the G League with the Mexico City Capitanes, posted six points, nine rebounds, one steal and one block in 25 minutes during his NBA debut against the Knicks.
“I was super grateful, but really surprised,” Garcia said about signing with Utah. “Coming from the Dominican Republic, it’s a small island where not a lot of basketball players can be here (in the NBA). I’m grateful for the opportunity to be here and bring the energy and do the things I do.”
Head coach Will Hardy praised Garcia’s effort.
“For Andersson’s first game, he really played hard,” Hardy said. “He guards, rebounds, and digs out loose balls. I was really proud of the way he played. The great part is that his strengths are very simple and repeatable.”
