The Sacramento Kings are not guaranteed to re-engage in trade talks for Domantas Sabonis this offseason, according to NBA insider Marc Stein reporting on The Stein Line. Sources indicate the team’s decision may hinge on the outcome of May’s draft lottery and the players available in a class led by Darryn Peterson, AJ Dybantsa, and Cameron Boozer.
Sabonis, who is sidelined for the season following meniscus surgery, is in the second year of a four-year, $186 million contract. The former All-Star has averaged 15.8 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists across 19 games this season, shooting 54.3% from the field.
The Kings have struggled in 2025-26, holding a 12-46 record and sitting last in the Western Conference. Sacramento has lost 16 consecutive games, with their last win at home coming against the Utah Jazz. Zach LaVine leads the team with 19.2 points per game, followed closely by DeMar DeRozan at 18.6 points per game.
Sacramento explored trade possibilities for Sabonis during the season but did not finalize a deal. Keeping him could provide stability at center while the Kings aim to rebuild around younger players such as Keegan Murray, Malik Monk, and Maxime Raynaud.
The draft lottery could dramatically affect Sacramento’s plans. A high selection may allow the Kings to pursue a top-tier prospect, potentially reducing the urgency to move Sabonis. Conversely, a lower pick could prompt management to consider trades to accelerate the team’s rebuild.
