The Golden State Warriors are preparing to explore the trade market for forward Jonathan Kuminga, with league activity expected to pick up once he becomes eligible to be moved in mid-January.

Reporting from Evan Sidery indicates the organization intends to gauge offers as it considers roster upgrades before February’s deadline.

Sidery tweeted Thursday that Golden State plans to shop Kuminga next month, aligning with the team’s long-standing strategy for the 23-year-old. His $22.5 million salary makes him one of the franchise’s most practical trade chips for acquiring an impact rotation piece.

Kuminga’s situation has been tied closely to his contractual timeline. After a lengthy restricted free agency that limited the Warriors’ offseason flexibility, he agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million extension on September 30. That deal makes him trade eligible on January 15.

Through 13 games this season, Kuminga is averaging 13.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 27.7 minutes. His production ranks behind Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler, but he remains the team’s most prominent young asset on a roster built around veterans.

Golden State enters Friday with a 9–8 record, leaning heavily on Curry’s 27.9 points per game and Butler’s two-way usage. The roster has shown solid balance, with Moses Moody, Brandin Podziemski and Will Richard contributing double-digit scoring across the rotation.

Kuminga’s broader résumé provides additional context for his market value. His career averages of 12.6 points and 4.1 rebounds highlight consistent improvement since entering the league, including a breakout 2023–24 campaign in which he produced 16.1 points across 74 appearances.

The Warriors’ current construction suggests the front office is seeking win-now additions. The organization’s pursuit of complementary pieces around Curry and Butler has prompted external speculation about what type of player Golden State might target.

Trading Kuminga would mark a significant organizational decision, given that he remains one of the few younger contributors with upside under team control. His blend of athleticism and size has previously been central to the Warriors’ developmental plans.

Still, the combination of salary matching, positional needs and competitive urgency has placed Kuminga at the center of Golden State’s trade discussions.
