Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga has officially requested a trade, sources told ESPN on Thursday, January 15. The 23-year-old becomes eligible to be moved immediately, marking a turning point in a contentious season.

Kuminga has not played in the past 13 games, including nine recent absences, with coach Steve Kerr limiting him in a deep rotation. The situation escalated after Kuminga ruled himself out with back soreness before the January 2 matchup against the Thunder.

Through 18 games this season, Kuminga is averaging 11.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 24.8 minutes per contest. He is shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 32.0 percent from three-point range while making $22.5 million in the first year of a two-year, $46.8 million extension.

League sources say the Warriors prioritize acquiring expiring contracts or wings who can shoot and defend alongside Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler. The team has resisted taking back long-term deals, though players like Keon Ellis on expiring contracts have been mentioned as potential trade sweeteners.

Sacramento and New Orleans have emerged as consistent destinations, with Dallas, Chicago, and Portland also showing interest. Golden State is reportedly protective of its future first-round picks, particularly in 2028 and beyond, but is willing to part with multiple 2026 or 2027 selections for the right deal.

Kuminga’s agent and the Warriors have reportedly coordinated to limit injury risk while trade talks continue. A $1.7 million bonus from an immediate trade could also influence discussions, making timing critical for both sides.

Golden State sits eighth in the Western Conference at 22–19, averaging 115.5 points while allowing 113.3 per game.
