Tyronn Lue reflected on the Clippers’ 105–102 defeat to the Atlanta Hawks, emphasizing the importance of managing player minutes.
“41 [minutes] last game was just too much, especially being sick,” Lue said. “As much as James wants to compete and play, it’s my job to make sure he doesn’t play too many minutes.”
Lue addressed the team’s 3–7 start, noting that early-season struggles are not cause for panic. “Being positive is key. I have great confidence in this group. We just have to be better, I have to be better, and the players have to do things the right way,” he added.
The head coach highlighted progress during practice, saying it doesn’t always translate to games but remains critical. “Our practices have been really good. When it does translate, we see results. Shootarounds help the guys understand what we’re trying to do,” Lue explained.
On the defensive end, Lue pointed to areas for improvement, especially guarding three-point opportunities. “The better your one-on-one defense is, the better your team defense is. We can’t be overhelping because that leads to offensive rebounds and threes,” he said.
Lue also discussed Ivica Zubac’s slower start this season, citing how teams have limited his touches in the post. “Early on they’re double-teaming or fronting him, but pick-and-rolls open him up. James can hit him early, then he can play in that pocket,” he said.
In response to Atlanta’s energy, Lue stressed physicality and discipline. “We’ve got to be the most physical team and steer them. They move the ball, slip backdoors, and cut well. We have to be ready to guard,” he said.
Regarding lineup adjustments, Lue confirmed Bradley Beal was out and John Collins started in his place to bolster rebounding. “We’ve been struggling rebounding, and John’s athleticism and energy help. He’s been really good for that,” Lue noted.
Despite the loss, Lue remained focused on accountability. “If we lose, it starts with me. I always look in the mirror first and see what I can do better,” he said.
James Harden had a triple-double with 35 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds, while Zubac added 13 points and 12 rebounds. Atlanta’s Vit Krejci scored a career-high 28 points, including eight 3-pointers, helping the Hawks overcome a 17-point deficit and improve to 6–5.
The Clippers will host the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday, aiming to halt their five-game losing streak, while Atlanta heads to Sacramento.
