Franz Wagner opened the 2025 Orlando Magic Media Day discussing his long summer, which included winning EuroBasket gold with Germany.
“Had two weeks since the final. I got to spend time at home with friends and family and feel in shape basketball-wise,” Wagner said.
On team expectations, he stated, “I think our expectations should be higher than any other year. We added Desmond Bane and other key players, so talent-wise and mentality-wise, we should go into the year thinking like a contender.”
Wagner called the Bane trade “bittersweet” but added, “He’s a hell of a player, fits our group extremely well, can create for others, and isn’t ball-dominant, which works for our offense.”
Reflecting on last season, Wagner emphasized health and team rhythm: “Staying healthy is the main thing. Offensively, finding a better flow for the whole team and making sure everyone’s in rhythm will be the biggest difference.”
He worked on his three-point shooting over the summer: “I want to be more consistent and showcase that this season.”
Wagner also highlighted the bond with his brother Moritz: “Getting to know him on a completely different level, both as a brother and a best friend, has been super rewarding.”
He praised rookie Tristan da Silva’s development: “He hit huge shots, brought energy, showed swagger and resilience. That will translate well to our NBA season.”
Discussing offensive balance, Wagner said, “Paolo and I need to make sure everyone is in a good spot and the offense flows. The goal is to maximize everyone’s ability, not just two players.”
Looking forward to the January Berlin game, Wagner shared, “It’s surreal. Fans from Germany and Europe will come, and I hope young people get inspired. Seeing it live goes a long way.”
On leadership, he reflected, “I’ve been learning to be more vocal and hold people accountable while staying true to who I am. That’s been a focus for my development this season.”
He also addressed global basketball growth: “The NBA is the platform, but the game is global. Other countries have strengths, and we get to share and connect through basketball.”
Entering the 2025–26 season, Wagner aims to combine personal development with team cohesion, helping the Magic reach their full potential with new additions like Desmond Bane and a strengthened roster.
