The New York Knicks could be bringing back a familiar face. According to SNY’s Ian Begley, veteran wing Matt Ryan is on the team’s radar as the front office finalizes deals before training camp.
Ryan spent part of last season with the Knicks, splitting time between the NBA roster and the Westchester Knicks in the G League. He averaged 1.5 points in 19 appearances for New York while shooting 31.6 percent from three.
The 28-year-old shooter entered the league in 2021 and has played for the Celtics, Lakers, Timberwolves, Pelicans, and Knicks. His best run came with New Orleans in 2023-24, when he averaged 5.4 points on 45.1 percent shooting from deep across 28 games.
Ryan was originally drafted first overall in the 2024 G League Draft by Westchester and later signed a two-way deal with the Knicks in December 2024. He was waived in March 2025, but his shooting ability kept him on the radar for teams in need of floor spacing.
New York is weighing multiple options for its final camp spots. Begley reported that guard Dennis Smith Jr. impressed in informal scrimmages, while veteran center Alex Len and young big man Trey Jemison III are also being considered.
The Knicks’ roster already features a strong core of Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Karl-Anthony Towns. However, adding a specialist like Ryan could provide insurance and additional shooting depth off the bench.
