Trey Lyles officially joined Real Madrid on Wednesday, confirming earlier reports of his deal with the Spanish giants. The 29-year-old Canadian forward/center signed a one-year contract and will make his EuroLeague debut under head coach Sergio Scariolo.
He now becomes part of a loaded roster featuring Facundo Campazzo, Walter Tavares, Sergio Llull, Mario Hezonja, Gabriel Deck, and several other top talents.
Lyles makes the jump after nearly a decade in the NBA, where he logged 662 games for the Utah Jazz, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons, and most recently the Sacramento Kings.
In 2024-25 with Sacramento, he appeared in 69 contests and contributed 6.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game, showing his reliability as a rotation big.
While this marks his first time playing outside the NBA, Lyles is no stranger to international competition. The Saskatoon native has long represented Canada, playing in the 2024 Paris Olympics and earlier in FIBA qualifiers and youth tournaments.
His international résumé includes a bronze medal at the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship and participation in the 2013 FIBA U19 World Cup.
Now, Lyles brings his blend of NBA experience and FIBA familiarity to Madrid, where expectations will be high for him to contribute immediately in Europe’s top club competition.
