Stefan Jovic didn’t stay long on the free-agent market during EuroBasket 2025, finding a new-old home with FC Bayern Munich. The German champions officially announced the return of the Serbian playmaker on Wednesday.
“FC Bayern Basketball has welcomed back a very familiar face: Serbian national player Stefan Jovic is joining the team of head coach Gordon Herbert for the upcoming season,” the press release read.
The 34-year-old guard, who already played for Bayern from 2017 to 2019, will join training camp later this week.
Back then, he was part of one of the club’s most successful stretches, winning the domestic double and back-to-back championships. Since then, he moved on to Moscow, Zaragoza, and Valencia, where he spent the last two years.
Bayern’s sporting director Dragan Tarlac explained the timing.
“It is no secret that we had to react to the serious injury of Rokas Jokubaitis, and that this was a very difficult undertaking so late in the summer. We are therefore even happier to have been able to bring in Stefan, an experienced and well-known playmaking point guard who, in our opinion, fits perfectly into our system.
“In addition, he knows Munich and the EuroLeague very well. Stefan also showed at the recent EuroBasket that he is in very good shape. We look forward to this reinforcement for the backcourt and his positive influence on our team.”
For Jovic, the decision to return was immediate.
“When I heard about Bayern’s interest over the weekend, the decision was immediately clear for me. We had a very successful time together back then, the club has developed a lot, and we felt very, very comfortable there,” he said while spending a few days in his hometown Niš after EuroBasket.
“Above all, my eldest son has very fond memories of Munich and was also immediately excited. So it was not only a sporting decision, but also a family one. I also know the medical staff very well, as a summer check-up in Munich is always part of my preparation. I’m fit and looking forward to this challenge.”
Already entering his ninth EuroLeague season, Jovic has played 154 games at the highest European level, averaging 6.3 points and 4.2 assists with 38% shooting from deep. He holds the EuroLeague record of 19 assists in a single game, achieved in 2015 with Red Star Belgrade.
Jovic also stressed his readiness to adapt.
“I’ll be ready, whether for fewer minutes or more, that will develop. I know that defense is very important to the coach, and I want to help there. In general, that’s my game: helping the team, playing for the team, and controlling the game.”
His decorated club career includes multiple titles with Red Star and trophies with Bayern. Internationally, he owns Olympic silver (2016) and two World Cup silvers (2014, 2023). At EuroBasket 2025, he averaged 5.5 assists in six games for Serbia.
The roster he rejoins is much different from his last Bayern stint, though one constant remains.
“From my former Bayern team, only captain Vladimir Lucic remains,” Jovic smiled, before adding: “That’s enough!”
