ESPN Front Office insider Bobby Marks outlined the financial limits surrounding Malik Beasley’s contract as the Detroit Pistons prepare for the 2025–26 season.
Marks explained on X that the Pistons still hold Beasley’s non-Bird rights, which cap their maximum offer at $7.2 million. He added that Detroit has already reshaped its roster by signing Caris LeVert, Duncan Robinson, and Javonte Green, while also counting on Jaden Ivey’s return from injury.
Beasley’s future became uncertain earlier this offseason when he was linked to a federal gambling probe. His attorneys, Steve Haney and Mike Schachter, confirmed to ESPN’s Shams Charania that he is not a target of the investigation.
The 28-year-old guard averaged 16.3 points and shot 41.6 percent from three across 82 games last season, marking one of his most efficient campaigns. He added 14 points per game in Detroit’s six-game playoff series against the New York Knicks, where the Pistons earned their first postseason win since 2008.
Detroit’s front office was previously considering a three-year, $42 million extension before the investigation stalled talks. With his name cleared, the financial path forward is narrower, as the team’s salary structure and non-Bird exception limit their flexibility.
The Pistons posted a 44–38 record in 2024–25, their best finish in nearly a decade, but quickly moved to retool around Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, and Tobias Harris. Their recent acquisitions give them depth on the wings, reducing pressure to bring Beasley back at a high cost.
Meanwhile, rival teams are monitoring the situation. Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported that the New York Knicks have maintained interest in Beasley since their first-round matchup with Detroit. His perimeter shooting and veteran presence make him a fit for contenders seeking floor spacing.
Beasley has played nine seasons in the league with stops in Denver, Minnesota, Utah, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and Detroit. His market value now hinges on whether the Pistons prioritize continuity or if another franchise offers him a larger role and a longer deal.
