Miami Heat forward Haywood Highsmith has unfortunately suffered a significant injury – a torn meniscus in his right knee – during a recent training session in his hometown of Baltimore.
The team confirmed today via their official Twitter account that Highsmith has already undergone surgery to repair the damage.
The surgical procedure took place last Friday in Miami and was performed by the Heat’s team physician, Dr. Harlan Selesnick, as noted in the announcement.
Following the operation, the player will immediately begin his rehabilitation process. However, medical staff estimate that his recovery timeline will keep him off the court for roughly eight to ten weeks.
With NBA training camps scheduled to begin in about seven and a half weeks, this injury will almost certainly delay Highsmith’s return to action this fall.
Given the expected recovery period, it’s unlikely that he will be fully healthy in time to participate in training camp activities and there’s even uncertainty about whether he will be ready for the start of the regular season, which follows shortly after camp.
This setback is particularly unfortunate for Highsmith, who is entering a contract year and aims to solidify his role as a consistent contributor in coach Erik Spoelstra’s rotation.
Last season, Highsmith experienced fluctuations in his playing time, sometimes starting games but also occasionally being left out of the lineup entirely.
Despite these ups and downs, he managed to appear in a career-high 74 regular-season games and averaged nearly 25 minutes on the floor per contest.
Known for his versatility and defensive prowess, Highsmith brought a solid all-around game to the Heat last season.
He averaged 6.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game, shooting efficiently with a .458 field goal percentage, .382 from beyond the arc, and .721 from the free-throw line.
Financially, he is set to earn around $5.6 million for the 2025-2026 season under the terms of his expiring contract.
