The Phoenix Suns have reached an agreement on a multi-year contract with forward Haywood Highsmith, filling their final open roster spot following last week’s trade deadline activity.
After maneuvering financially to move roughly $2.4 million below the luxury tax threshold, Phoenix used the added flexibility to bring in Highsmith as a depth addition to the roster.
Highsmith was originally acquired by the Brooklyn Nets last offseason in a salary-clearing deal involving the Miami Heat.
However, he never appeared in a game for Brooklyn after undergoing knee surgery during the offseason.
The forward was nearing a return to action before being waived as part of the Nets’ trade deadline adjustments.
He is now expected to be available to play shortly after the All-Star break.
During the previous season with Miami, the 6-foot-5 forward played in 74 games and provided steady minutes off the bench.
Highsmith averaged 6.5 points and 3.4 rebounds in 24.6 minutes per game while shooting 38.2 percent from three-point range on 3.1 attempts per contest, showcasing his value as a reliable perimeter defender and floor spacer.
