Trae Young is still waiting for the Atlanta Hawks to open contract extension talks — and the team’s inaction may be intentional.
Despite being eligible for a new deal this summer, the Hawks have not offered an extension to their All-Star point guard. According to former NBA player Eddie Johnson, the lack of movement is a clear message.
On SiriusXM NBA Radio, Johnson said the franchise is pushing back after years of accommodating Young’s demands.
“They’re not going to cater to you like they used to,” Johnson said. “They did it in the past, and the word out of Atlanta wasn’t too good… I think they’re trying to send you a message.”
Young, who is entering his eighth NBA season, remains under contract through 2025–26, with a $48.9 million player option for 2026–27. He signed a five-year, $215 million extension in 2021.
Despite his production — including 24.2 points and a career-best 11.6 assists per game last season — the Hawks have stagnated. Since a surprise run to the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals, they have failed to advance past the first round.
Atlanta’s new front office has been reshaping the roster. They traded for Kristaps Porzingis earlier this offseason, but have yet to show the same urgency regarding Young’s future.
ESPN’s Marc J. Spears recently reported that Young is “disappointed” by the lack of an offer. His body language during the NBA Finals and a cryptic social media post further fueled speculation.
Johnson warned Young not to respond emotionally.
“Don’t get immature and start sending out tweets,” he said. “Everybody knows you’re going to get paid.”
The Hawks’ approach signals a shift in power dynamics. After giving Young full control in recent years, the front office appears more cautious about long-term commitments.
If no deal materializes this season, Young could enter next summer with leverage — or growing doubts about the organization’s commitment.
