Jack McVeigh is officially returning to the NBL, signing with the Cairns Taipans for the 2025–26 season following a year in the NBA system.
The Taipans announced Tuesday that the 203cm forward has agreed to a two-year deal, with the second season a mutual option, pending NBL approval.
McVeigh, 29, spent the 2024–25 season with the Houston Rockets on a two-way contract, appearing in nine NBA games and logging significant time in the G League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
He averaged 15.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, and shot 37% from deep across 37 G League contests, showcasing the kind of floor spacing and scoring versatility that made him a sought-after free agent.
His standout play continued during the 2025 NBA Summer League, where he averaged 14.0 points while shooting 58.8% from the field and 45.5% from three in four games for the Atlanta Hawks.
McVeigh’s return to the NBL was expected after the Tasmania JackJumpers granted his request for release, relinquishing their right of first refusal and allowing him to explore his next move.
According to ESPN’s Olgun Uluc, both the Taipans and Illawarra Hawks were in pursuit, but Cairns ultimately landed the Australian Boomer.
McVeigh had options beyond Australia. Multiple EuroLeague clubs expressed interest, and he was still evaluating possible NBA offers before finalizing his decision.
Despite the international interest, McVeigh opted for a return home, aligning with a team that offers both a significant role and continuity in development.
He last played in the NBL for Tasmania, helping the JackJumpers reach multiple playoff appearances and establishing himself as a premier local forward in the league.
