AS Monaco Basket has been placed in cessation of payments, effectively entering bankruptcy proceedings, the club announced Wednesday as it confirmed a pause in its operations and uncertainty over its future.
“Despite all the efforts made, AS Monaco Basket has been placed in cessation of payments,” the club said in a statement addressed to its supporters. Monaco added that it would now “take a break” while hoping to find a path toward restructuring and eventually relaunching the project.
The development comes just months after Monaco completed one of the most successful seasons in its history. The Roca Team won the French championship, French Cup and Leaders Cup in 2025-26, adding to a trophy collection that has grown rapidly over the past decade.
Monaco has won three French championships, two French Cups, four Leaders Cups and one French Supercup. Its greatest European achievement came in 2021, when it won the EuroCup to claim the first European title by a Monegasque team in a collective sport.
The club subsequently established itself as a regular EuroLeague contender. Monaco reached the EuroLeague Final Four in 2023, finishing third, before advancing to the championship game in 2025.
The financial collapse therefore arrives at a striking point in Monaco’s sporting history.
The club’s rise has transformed its position in French and European basketball. Founded in 1928, Monaco spent much of its history outside the top level before returning to France’s elite after winning the Pro B title in 2015. It subsequently became one of the country’s dominant teams.
Monaco’s 2025-26 domestic campaign ended with the club claiming all three major French trophies listed in its statement. The success followed the team’s EuroLeague run in which it had already established itself as one of Europe’s leading clubs.
However, the club’s statement indicates that the professional men’s basketball operation will now pause while a potential restructuring is explored.
The future of men’s basketball in Monaco will instead temporarily rest with the Association de l’ASM. The association’s leadership, coaching staff, youth players and first team competing in Nationale 3 will carry the club forward during the current uncertainty.
The club closed its statement by thanking the “Roca Family,” its supporters, and expressing hope that Monaco will eventually return to the highest level of basketball.
