Concerns about Luka Doncic’s long-term future with the Los Angeles Lakers appear to be fading significantly, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
Recent developments suggest the player is becoming more deeply involved with the organization’s direction, particularly evident in his behind-the-scenes role during free agency.
The Slovenian star was reportedly instrumental in convincing both Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton to sign with the Lakers, with Stein noting that Doncic’s personal outreach to Smart was a major factor in the veteran guard choosing Los Angeles over Phoenix.
Throughout the free agency period, the 26-year-old phenom and his representatives have maintained close communication with Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka.
The former Mavericks standout has expressed specific roster priorities, pushing for the addition of a rim-running big man, reliable perimeter shooting, and improved defensive pieces to bolster the Lakers’ rotation.
Shortly after the Lakers’ first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Doncic sat down with Pelinka and new head coach JJ Redick for a strategic meeting about the team’s future and how to build a championship contender around him.
Though the playmaker is not eligible to sign a contract extension until August 2nd, speculation had emerged that he might wait until after EuroBasket concludes in September to make any final decision.
When the time comes, Doncic will have two lucrative options on the table: he could sign a four-year, $229 million extension with the Lakers as early as next month, or wait until the 2025 offseason to potentially land a five-year, $296 million supermax deal if he plays out the final year of his current contract.
Either way, his increased involvement in roster decisions and communication with Lakers leadership strongly indicates growing confidence in his commitment to the franchise’s long-term vision.
