Mark Cuban offered a striking comparison for Cooper Flagg’s NBA Summer League debut, likening the rookie’s developmental path to that of Kobe Bryant. The former Dallas Mavericks owner shared his thoughts with reporters after watching Flagg contribute across the board despite shooting struggles.
Flagg, selected No. 1 overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, made his professional debut Thursday night at the NBA 2K26 Summer League in Las Vegas. The Mavericks edged the Los Angeles Lakers 87–85 at Thomas & Mack Center, with Flagg’s defensive plays proving crucial in the closing minutes.
The 18-year-old finished with 10 points on 5-for-21 shooting, missing all five three-point attempts. However, he added six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a pivotal block in the final minute that helped Dallas secure the win.
Speaking to a small group of reporters, Cuban emphasized that Flagg’s rough shooting night was not a concern. “You kind of have to think of the Kobe Bryant arc,” he said, noting that Bryant also needed time to develop early in his career. Cuban added, “Kobe didn’t come in right away as a polished player. It took him two years to get it.”
Cuban highlighted other aspects of Flagg’s game, praising his passing, defensive awareness, and poise under pressure. “He can play the game. He can defend. So you can put him in any NBA game,” Cuban said, according to Mark Medina of Sportskeeda, noting Flagg’s maturity at just 18 years old.
During the tight contest, Ryan Nembhard led Dallas with 21 points, while Miles Kelly chipped in 17. Gabe McGlothan added nine as the Mavericks shot 43% from the field and held the Lakers to 36.7%. Flagg’s block with 1:10 remaining set up Nembhard’s decisive three-pointer to give Dallas the lead for good.
On the Lakers’ side, Cole Swider scored 22 points, hitting six three-pointers, while Dalton Knecht added 15 and DJ Steward had 14. Bronny James managed eight points in 20 minutes of action.
