Kristaps Porzingis spoke with the media this week for the first time since being traded to the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team deal finalized on July 7. The 7-foot-3 forward shared his thoughts on joining the franchise, adjusting to a new city, and his role with a younger roster.
Porzingis described his first few days in Atlanta as “super good” and “exciting,” adding, “Just arriving here… the sun was shining. I caught like a good vibe here from the beginning.” He noted that he has already been house-hunting and meeting people in the organization while getting settled ahead of the season.
When asked about his well-known nickname, the “Unicorn,” Porzingis confirmed it originated from Kevin Durant during his rookie year. “KD gave me that nickname I guess, and from that point on it just kind of stuck,” he said. At first, he admitted he didn’t love it but grew to appreciate the recognition from one of the league’s greats.
Discussing his on-court contributions, the Latvian big man pointed to his efficiency in the post and ability to stretch the floor. “For the last three years I think I’ve been, if not the most efficient, one of the most efficient players in the post-up because of the mismatches I create,” he said. Porzingis also highlighted his rim protection as another area where he can help Atlanta.
The 29-year-old reflected on his time with the Celtics last season, noting the difference between Boston’s veteran, championship-focused culture and the youthful Hawks roster. “It was a different environment… they had a strong culture already of how the organization works,” he said. “That’s what I want to bring here also… how professional, how locked in those guys were towards the goal.”
Porzingis acknowledged he hasn’t yet spent much time with his new teammates in person, though some have texted to welcome him. He expects to return after competing in EuroBasket 2025 and plans to connect with the group ahead of training camp.
Looking ahead, Porzingis emphasized his commitment to improving his shooting, continuing his efficiency in the post, and being a mentor to younger teammates. “This team has kind of been almost there… but can’t really get over the hump,” he said. “I think this is a year we can be sneaky good, surprise people, and get further than maybe expected.”
Addressing Hawks fans directly, Porzingis concluded, “Be excited for this year. I’m going to bring my experience, my game, and we’re going to give it all to go as far as we can.”
