Norman Powell addressed the media in Miami for the first time since being traded from the Los Angeles Clippers, speaking at length about his reaction to the deal, his fit with the Heat, and his career trajectory.
Asked what he thought when he first heard about the trade, Powell admitted, “Honestly, I didn’t know what to think at first. It’s been a crazy last couple weeks… I knew it was a possibility just from them communicating that teams were interested, but it seemed like it wasn’t a high possibility. I was expecting extension talks when I got back from Europe, but then I got the call that I was traded. Obviously, it’s a shock.”
Powell explained that despite the initial surprise, hearing it was the Heat brought excitement. “I was really excited,” he said. “I’ve had a couple guys that I’ve played with talk about the fans, the city, the organization. Growing up a big fan of Dwyane Wade and watching the Heat, it’s definitely a cool full-circle moment for me.”
When asked what led to his career-best season last year, Powell credited hard work and opportunity. “I’m extremely hardworking,” he noted. “I fit the culture perfectly—grit, competitiveness, late nights, early mornings. Having the full opportunity to showcase my game and make mistakes, to be a focal point for a team, that made the difference.”
The veteran guard also addressed perceptions of his role. “I see myself as a key guy, a one-two option that can help carry a team,” he said. “I’ve never believed in the limitations people talk about. Even as a second-round pick, I always saw myself as a go-to guy who could help a team win. I can be an All-Star given the right opportunity.”
Powell shared his excitement about playing alongside Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, calling them “versatile, scrappy, and confident” and outlining how his off-ball movement, shooting, and pick-and-roll skills could complement their games. He also welcomed the challenge of rekindling his defensive reputation, saying, “I’m really excited to put my imprint on the defensive end and get back to guarding and pressuring.”
When asked whether he considers himself underrated, Powell acknowledged, “I never viewed myself as that, but I think I am… playing alongside All-Stars and Hall of Famers, you kind of take a backseat even when you’re accomplishing things. But I know what I bring to the table.”
