The Dallas Mavericks have officially brought in veteran coach Frank Vogel as the team’s new associate head coach, placing him second-in-command under current head coach Jason Kidd.
Vogel fills the vacancy left by Sean Sweeney, who recently departed the Mavericks to join the San Antonio Spurs as associate head coach under new head coach Mitch Johnson.
This move reunites Kidd and Vogel, who previously worked together on the Los Angeles Lakers coaching staff during the 2019-20 season. In that stint, Vogel served as head coach while Kidd was one of his top assistants.
Their collaboration proved successful, culminating in an NBA championship inside the Orlando bubble. The familiarity and mutual respect between the two were reportedly key factors in Vogel’s decision to join the Mavericks’ bench.
Jason Kidd, meanwhile, is expected to receive a contract extension with Dallas prior to the start of the 2025-26 season.
Kidd had recently been considered a leading candidate for the New York Knicks’ head coaching vacancy, but the Knicks were denied permission by the Mavericks to speak with him and ultimately hired Mike Brown.
As for Vogel, this role marks a quick turnaround following his firing from the Phoenix Suns after just one season in 2023-24. His tenure in Phoenix ended amid organizational changes and disappointing playoff results.
Before that, he led the Lakers from 2019 to 2022 and is best remembered for guiding Los Angeles to their 17th title in 2020.
Vogel brings a strong defensive pedigree and years of head coaching experience, which Dallas hopes will help solidify its coaching infrastructure.
His arrival also gives Kidd a trusted and proven presence on the bench, which will be especially valuable following the recent exits of other key assistants, including Alex Jensen and potentially Jared Dudley.
