The Boston Celtics have reportedly become active participants in the pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to The Ringer’s Bill Simmons.
He recently revealed that Boston made a trade offer to the Milwaukee Bucks for Antetokounmpo last week, signaling a significant shift in the franchise’s approach.
The report comes after Simmons had previously stated that he believed the Celtics were not involved in discussions for the former MVP.
According to him, something changed within the organization, although he was unable to identify exactly what led Boston to alter its stance.
What appears clear now is that the Celtics have “dove in” on the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes and are exploring ways to acquire one of the league’s biggest stars.
Boston is expected to have considerable flexibility entering draft night, with access to as many as four tradeable first-round picks and two draft-pick swaps that could be included in a potential blockbuster package.
Any realistic deal for Antetokounmpo would likely require significant outgoing talent.
Multiple reports and rumors have suggested that Jaylen Brown could be involved in a complex multi-team trade structure, either heading directly to Milwaukee or being routed to a third team that would send additional young players and draft assets to the Bucks.
Several franchises have been mentioned as possible facilitators in such a transaction, including the Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans Pelicans, and Portland Trail Blazers.
Adding further intrigue to the situation, The Athletic recently reported that Antetokounmpo would be willing to commit to Boston long-term if he were traded there.
Such a commitment would significantly increase the Celtics’ confidence in pursuing a deal and could make them one of the strongest contenders should the Bucks seriously entertain trade offers.
