Boston Celtics president Brad Stevens said Thursday that Al Horford returning to the team is “unlikely,” signaling the end of an era for the veteran big man in Boston.
Speaking with reporters, Stevens called Horford “an all-time Celtic” and praised his impact both on the court and in mentoring younger players, but acknowledged the team is moving in a younger direction.
Horford, 39, is currently weighing his options in free agency after completing his 18th NBA season and helping the Celtics capture the 2025 NBA championship.
Horford is evaluating whether to continue his career or retire, with the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and New York Knicks among the teams expressing interest.
The Warriors are considered the frontrunner if Horford decides to play, as they value his floor spacing, defensive IQ, and veteran leadership to complement their aging core.
The Lakers, meanwhile, are searching for experienced depth behind newly acquired center Deandre Ayton and have been linked to Horford as a potential solution.
Los Angeles has made bolstering its frontcourt a priority this offseason and sees Horford’s playoff experience and shooting ability as valuable assets.
Horford has appeared in 1,138 regular-season games over his career with the Hawks, Celtics, Thunder, and 76ers, averaging 12.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 3.2 assists.
He has been named to five All-Star teams and won his first NBA title with the Celtics this past season.
