Boston Celtics veteran Al Horford faces an uncertain offseason as he approaches unrestricted free agency.
Although the 38-year-old center had previously stated he had no immediate plans to retire, his tone was more measured during his end-of-season exit interview.
Horford told reporters that it’s “too soon” to make any decisions about his future, noting that he needs time to reflect before taking the next step.
The seasoned big man shared that he intends to spend time with his wife and children in the coming weeks to discuss what comes next, both personally and professionally.
He acknowledged that the Celtics’ early exit from the playoffs was emotionally draining, adding that there’s still “a lot for me to process” before he can fully evaluate his path forward.
Horford’s career has taken several turns, including two separate stints with Boston. He first joined the Celtics in 2016, spending three seasons with the team and playing a key role in their playoff runs.
In 2019, he departed to sign a lucrative deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, but the fit was less than ideal, and he was traded after just one season.
Horford then landed with the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of a salary cap move, appearing in only a limited number of games before Boston reacquired him in 2021.
Since returning to the Celtics, Horford has been a vital part of their frontcourt rotation, bringing leadership, defense, and floor spacing with his three-point shooting.
His contributions over the last four seasons have been instrumental in Boston’s continued status as a championship contender.
As Horford weighs his options, the Celtics – and the league at large – will be watching closely.
Whether he chooses to return for another run or decides to hang up his sneakers, his impact on the game, particularly in Boston, is undeniable.
