According to sources cited by Marc Stein on The Stein Line, the Dallas Mavericks are the leading candidates to sign D’Angelo Russell in the upcoming offseason.

The Mavericks are positioned to offer Russell the taxpayer midlevel exception, which amounts to $5.7 million for the first year.

While the Mavericks are also considering veteran point guard Chris Paul, Paul reportedly prefers to play closer to his home in Los Angeles, which could complicate Dallas’ pursuit of him.

Additionally, the Mavericks have an interest in bringing back Dante Exum.

However, if the team uses the taxpayer midlevel exception to sign Russell or another point guard, they would lose that exception, limiting their salary cap flexibility.

Moreover, the Mavericks currently have a full roster with 15 players under contract.

Exum, on the other hand, is aiming to continue his NBA career rather than returning to play in Europe next season.
