The Toronto Raptors have made an earlier-than-expected decision regarding the future of their head coach, Darko Rajakovic, by officially picking up his team option.
Typically, organizations wait until a coach enters the final year of their deal before making such a commitment, but the Raptors have opted to show their faith in Rajakovic ahead of schedule, signaling their belief in his leadership during the team’s rebuilding phase.
With this move, Rajakovic is now under contract with Toronto for the next two seasons beyond the current campaign.
Despite a challenging record of 53-104 in his first two years at the helm, the organization has reportedly been encouraged by the progress of its young players and the team’s ability to remain competitive in games, even amid growing pains and losses.
Toronto’s front office has placed a strong emphasis on developing its youthful core, which includes Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and Jakob Poeltl – all of whom are signed through at least the 2026-27 season.
Further bolstering that foundation, the Raptors acquired Brandon Ingram at the trade deadline and quickly secured him on a three-year contract extension.
Though Ingram has yet to make his on-court debut for Toronto due to an ongoing recovery from an ankle injury, he is expected to be a key piece in the team’s long-term plans.
By locking in Rajakovic’s option well in advance, the Raptors are providing stability at the coaching position while reaffirming their commitment to a long-term vision centered around player development and sustained competitiveness.
