During a game against the Utah Jazz last week, tensions ran high for the Memphis Grizzlies as guard Desmond Bane was seen on camera engaging in a heated exchange with teammate Santi Aldama.
The incident, which quickly escalated, began when Bane reportedly confronted Aldama about his defensive effort. As Aldama responded, Bane forcefully shoved him onto the team’s bench, momentarily creating a scene of internal conflict on the court.
Despite the intensity of the moment, both players have since downplayed any lingering tension, emphasizing their mutual respect and competitive drive.
“Two competitors,” Bane explained when asked about the altercation. “We’re scratching and clawing against a Utah team on the road. We’re trying to push each other to be better. And that was pretty much that. I probably took it too far. I love Santi. He was in my wedding, I’ll be in his wedding. We talked right on the bench right after, hugged it out in the locker room, and everything’s great.”
Aldama echoed Bane’s sentiments, acknowledging that while the confrontation wasn’t ideal, it stemmed from their shared desire to win.
“Little disagreement,” Aldama admitted. “Definitely not a good look. Not going to sit here and act like it’s nothing, but we talked about it… It would be worse if we had a bunch of guys that just sat down, twiddled their thumbs, and just acted like they were just fine with the situation. We want to win. We’re competitive. We just said what we said and then moved on.”
Ultimately, the Grizzlies teammates see the incident as a moment of passion rather than a sign of deeper discord, reinforcing that their focus remains on pushing each other and competing at the highest level.
