Luka Doncic is no longer eligible for the five-year, $345 million supermax extension after being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, marking a significant shift in his future contract prospects.
Originally, Doncic would have been eligible for this lucrative extension as early as this summer, but the trade to the Lakers has removed that possibility.
Instead, the player could sign a three-year deal this summer, which would allow him to accumulate ten years of NBA service by the 2028-29 season.
Once that milestone is reached, he would then become eligible for a supermax contract, with a starting salary projected to be around $72 million per season, as reported by Bobby Marks of ESPN.
While Doncic’s future remains bright, the Mavericks’ decision to trade him came largely due to growing concerns about his conditioning, which reportedly led to frustration within the organization.
These conditioning issues, alongside other factors, prompted the Mavs to seek a potential deal despite Doncic’s undeniable talent and star power.
