Anthony Davis agreed to waive his trade bonus as part of a three-team deal that facilitated Luka Doncic’s move to the Los Angeles Lakers. This selfless move by Davis allowed the deal to be structured in a way that benefitted both teams financially.
The trade also had a significant impact on the Dallas Mavericks’ cap space. Before acquiring Davis, the Mavs were $5.1 million over the luxury tax limit. However, following the deal, they now find themselves $628,000 under the tax, according to Bobby Marks of ESPN, giving them a bit more flexibility moving forward.
The Mavs had reached out to the Lakers with an offer involving Doncic just “a few days ago,” kicking off the trade discussions that ultimately led to this unexpected and transformative move. The speed at which the deal unfolded caught many by surprise.
