Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren are two of the NBA’s most promising young stars. Despite being drafted in different years, the rivalry between them has intensified since they both made their debuts in the same season.
Wembanyama won the 2023 Rookie of the Year award, while Holmgren missed his rookie season due to injury. Their competitive dynamic has continued into the 2024-25 season.
Michael C. Wright noted that Wembanyama has been reluctant to mention Holmgren’s name. When asked about the matchup, he stated, “I’m excited to get back to winning ways. It’s always a good challenge to play Oklahoma City.” Notably, Wembanyama did not reference Holmgren directly, leading to speculation about their relationship.
Wright elaborated on this rivalry, stating, “Victor will not even say the man’s name. That’s pretty much been the theme ever since Victor Wembanyama arrived in San Antonio.” He added, “I think it’s because there is a real budding rivalry here on both sides. Both of those guys are trying to take the attention away from the rivalry and put it specifically on the team.
“That’s what’s going on these days. I’m telling you they don’t like each other, they respect each other.”
On Wednesday night, the Thunder improved to 4-0 with a 105-93 victory over the Spurs, who fell to 1-3. Lu Dort led Oklahoma City with 20 points, while Holmgren contributed 19.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 18 points despite struggling with his shooting. Jalen Williams also played a crucial role, recording 12 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds.
Harrison Barnes was the top scorer for San Antonio with 18 points. Jeremy Sochan contributed 17 points and nine rebounds, while Chris Paul chipped in with 14 points and nine assists.
Wembanyama faced challenges in the game, scoring only six points on 1-for-5 shooting. However, he grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots.
The Spurs’ inability to find consistent scoring was detrimental, especially when trying to utilize Wembanyama’s skill set against Holmgren.
Statistically, Holmgren is currently outperforming Wembanyama this season. Holmgren averages 22.5 points, 11 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, and 2.8 assists in 31.5 minutes per game. In contrast, Wembanyama averages 16.5 points, 11 rebounds, 2.8 blocks, and 2.3 assists in 30.3 minutes.
