The trade that brought Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas and Dennis Smith Jr to New York was not beneficial for the Knicks. According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, Smith could be mistaken for the Knicks after the season. The former ninth absolute choice was supported by coach David Fizdale and assistant Keith Smart. Both left the organization, as did Steve Mills.

Worst season for Smith

The new president Leon Rose has no relationship with Smith, who has not progressed as hoped. Smith was left in competition with Frank Ntilikina and Elfrid Payton for the point guard position, but did not express himself at best. It was rumored that Smith might want to get out of New York, so a possible trade could go well with him. He is experiencing his worst NBA season, averaging just 5.5 points per game in 15.8 minutes.
