Former NBA lottery pick Dennis Smith Jr. has found a new opportunity in the G League after being waived by the Wisconsin Herd, league sources told Marc Stein on January 21.
The Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Miami Heat’s affiliate, claimed Smith, giving the guard a chance to rebuild his path back to the NBA.
Smith appeared in six games for the Herd this season, averaging 10 points, 3.3 assists, and 2.7 rebounds over 21.3 minutes per game. He shot 43.6% from the field and 29.4% from three-point range, showcasing flashes of his scoring ability and playmaking despite limited action.
The 28-year-old guard recently returned from a stint with Real Madrid, where he competed in both the Spanish Liga ACB and the EuroLeague. His time overseas followed his release from the Dallas Mavericks.
Smith’s NBA career spans seven seasons, including stops with Dallas, New York, Detroit, Portland, Charlotte, and Brooklyn. He averaged 15.2 points and 5.2 assists in his rookie season with the Mavericks and most recently contributed 6.6 points and 3.6 assists in 2023–24.
