Great Britain shooting guard James Jones has joined the Plymouth Raiders with a week to go before the start of the British Basketball League season.

Jones replaces an earlier summer signing Sebastien Maio, who has been released from his contract. It is also rumoured that another summer signing, Ryan Read has been cut from the Raiders squad.

The Manchester-born guard was a key player in Mersey Tigers’ treble-winning season last term. His great form earned him a call-up to the Great Britain training camp before Eurobasket in Lithuania this past summer. Jones was unfortunately amongst the first players to be cut though.

Jones is delighted to be playing for the Raiders this season, as he looks forward to a fresh start: “I’m really happy to be in Plymouth,” Jones said. “I’ve heard a lot of good things about coach Love and the whole of the Raiders organisation, and can’t wait to get started with the team. It’s going to be a great season.”

Plymouth Raiders will once again look to challenge for honours this season, and the addition of the BBL Playoff final MVP is another boost for coach Gavin Love as his side travel to the Guildford Heat in the BBL Trophy this Sunday.

Jones leaves the Mersey Tigers, who have had to postpone their opening match this weekend as the British Basketball League continue to work with the Merseyside outfit in an attempt to save their season.

Tigers have only signed two players in the off-season, and have failed to commit to their pre-season fixtures.
