The Atlanta Hawks General Manager Travis Schlenk explained why they traded Luka Doncic to the Dallas Mavericks on the Draft night.

“Not a lot of people know this…if we stayed at 3, we would have taken Luka. We had worked with his agent, he did a physical with us that morning in New York…but then Dallas came in an hour or so before the draft. I told them all along that it would take another lottery pick for us to slide back, and that’s when the conversations got started,” Schlenk said, per Fade Away World.

The Hawks selected Doncic at No. 3 overall and traded him to the Mavericks in exchange for point guard Trae Young, who was selected by Dallas at No. 5 overall, and a protected future first round draft pick in 2019.

This season, Luka Doncic is averaging 20.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 5.6 assists, while shooting at 43.0 percent from the floor and 34.8 from three in 32.2 minutes of action.

Trae Young is averaging 16.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 7.6 assists, while shooting at 40.6 percent from the floor and 31.2 from three in 30.1 minutes of action.
