A 23-8 run in the third quarter was enough for Argentina to dominate USA (80-63) and climb on top of the standings.
Although the visitors made a better start to the game (13-16), the hosts came back and closed the first half in front by three (35-32).
Argentina played excellent on both ends of the floor in the third quarter and outscored their opponents 23-8 to claim a double-digit lead and never look back (58-40). The Americans were unable to turn things around and, consequently, they were defeated.
Nicolas Laprovittola led the way for the winners, with 17 points and eight assists, as Luis Scola added 10 points and nine rebounds. On the other hand, Travis Trice had a team-high 16 points for the losing squad.
Argentina (8-1) now are on top of Group E, whereas USA missed the opportunity to secure their ticket to China (7-2).
Argentina will face Mexico on Sunday, while the Americans will play against Uruguay in Montevideo.
