Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos has met with FIBA general secretary Patrick Baumann ahead of a proposed move to the Basketball Champions League.

Giannakopoulos is present in Athens for the Basketball Champions League Final Four that starts tomorrow.

The final decision on Panathinaikos’ inclusion in next season’s Champions League though has not been made official and that nothing has been made official.

“When you see that something has failed, you have to examine every possibility, for Panathinaikos to play in a competition worthy of its fans,” the Greens’ owner said to assembled media in Athens.

“EuroLeague has failed, everyone can see that”, he continued. “There has been contracting with other teams, though I doubt if they have all read today’s announcement. I want us to be part of a respectful competition.”

Giannakopoulos also added : “(Basketball Champions League) exists for three years and has already taken big steps forward. With Panathinaikos’ presence, I think that the competition will grow even faster.”
