San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper compared Victor Wembanyama to NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain after the French superstar delivered a historic performance in a narrow victory over the Dallas Mavericks.
Wembanyama finished with 52 points, 24 rebounds, and eight blocks as San Antonio secured a 112-111 win over Dallas.
The 22-year-old established career highs in both scoring and rebounding while dominating on both ends of the floor.
Harper praised his teammate’s ability to overcome defensive adjustments, suggesting that opposing teams have few answers for his combination of size and skill.
“He’s basically Wilt [Chamberlain],” Harper said. “The other team tries to do everything. They throw out any adjustment, every adjustment. It’s hard to keep big fella out of the paint.”
Wembanyama also produced an impressive defensive sequence in the second quarter, blocking three shots within just 13 seconds.
Harper admitted that facing such defensive pressure would be frustrating for any opponent.
“If I got blocked three times in a row, I feel like I’d be pretty upset,” Harper said. “But that’s Vic. He takes pride on the defensive side and things like that are just natural to him.”
Beyond his statistical dominance, Wembanyama delivered a crucial free throw with 24.2 seconds remaining to help San Antonio secure the one-point victory.
Despite the career-best performance, the Spurs center suggested that he believes similar outings could become more common as he regains his physical condition.
“Also, I haven’t been feeling great lately. I’m sick. I felt like I got my legs back,” Wembanyama said. “So, it should be more like this more often.”
