For the San Antonio Spurs, the decision rests not in a lack of ambition but in a belief that time is on their side.

With young stars like Victor Wembanyama (21) and Dylan Harper (19) leading the roster, San Antonio sees a clear path toward building a sustained contender – one that doesn’t require trading its future for a soon-to-be-37 Kevin Durant.

“I think they’re going to really be stocking their assets for potentially a bigger move, a bigger player, someone who may fit their timeline,” NBA insider Shams Charania shared.

Spurs GM Brian Wright and head coach Mitch Johnson are reportedly taking cues from the seminal Spurs model under RC Buford and Gregg Popovich – accumulate high-upside assets and strike when timing aligns, not when pressure mounts.

With a pipeline full of picks and young talent, they’re prepared to strike when a prime opportunity arises.

“What that front office… want to have a similar run…and be setup similarly to RC Buford and Gregg Popovich,” Charania noted. “It’s not to say they don’t have interest in Kevin Durant. They do… but what other teams are offering is a little more aggressive.”

In sum, the Spurs remain patient: Calculating, disciplined, and chasing the right chance, not just the loudest name.
