San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has opened up about his experience meditating at a Chinese monastery, admitting that maintaining his concentration during the lengthy sessions was more difficult than he expected.
The French center visited the monastery during the summer as part of his offseason preparation, where he participated in meditation sessions that required extended periods of complete silence.
During an interview with Jon Wertheim, Wembanyama was asked how he handled the experience.
“Last summer you trained at a Chinese monastery famously. Did you get into the meditation? How’d you do with it?” Wertheim asked.
Wembanyama explained that the monastery’s approach to meditation was far more demanding than anything he had previously experienced.
“It was hard be because they push it to the next level. It was really hard. I think the first very first day it was an hour 40 of meditation. Silence to complete silence. It was crazy. It was really hard.”
When Wertheim asked whether he had ever attempted anything similar, Wembanyama responded, “Nothing close to that.”
The interviewer then asked how long the Spurs star managed to remain fully focused during meditation.
“I was probably locked in for 30 minutes and then an hour and a half wondering how much longer is it going to go on for.”
