NBA guard Ty Jerome has credited Stephen Curry’s dedication to strength training for helping him understand what he needed to improve to take the next step in his career.
Jerome, who spent the 2022-23 season with the Golden State Warriors, explained that watching Curry’s daily routine changed his perspective on physical preparation and the importance of developing his body.
“I would watch all their work in the weight room, to me, because my whole thing was like, since I got to the league, you would see me work out in the summer, be like, ‘You’re one of the best shooters I’ve seen,’ X, Y, and Z.”
Despite receiving praise for his shooting ability, Jerome realized that improving his physical conditioning could help him become a more effective NBA player.
“And finally it clicked for me. It was like, ‘All right, what’s the separator? It’s my body.’ If I can figure this piece out, I can do it.”
Jerome said Curry provided a clear example of the work required to perform consistently at the highest level.
“And when I got to Golden State, I look at Steph. He’s the best shooter of all time. And you look at what he’s doing, and he’s on the court a lot, but he’s going to on the weight room everyday, after shootaround, after every game, on every practice day.”
Seeing Curry regularly spend time in the weight room convinced Jerome that strength training needed to become a consistent part of his own routine.
“And so I’m just looking at everything he’s doing. I’m like, ‘Man, this is an everyday thing. You got to be in the weight room.'”
Jerome explained that the experience helped him recognize the physical commitment necessary to establish himself in the NBA and maintain a lengthy career.
“So that was really the biggest thing for me. I’m looking at that, ‘This is what it takes to be successful and to hopefully play for a long time.'”
